Presidential Saakashvili was elected president in January 2004. OSCE observers described the vote as a "welcome contrast" to a rigged parliamentary poll the previous November. Mr Saakashvili had led the 'Rose Revolution' protests which followed that election, forcing his predecessor as president, Eduard Shevardnadze, to resign. Soon after that, Mr Saakashvili consolidated his position when his National Movement-Democratic Front won parliamentary elections. It holds the majority of seats and opposition representation is extremely weak. However, after last months protests of the opposition, that were violently stopped by the police, several parties expect that there will be again demonstrations organized by the (pro Russian) opposition if Saakashvili will win the elections held on January 5.
